Lauryn Hill, the reigning queen of hip-hop, announced Tuesday that she's teaming up with AltaVista for her first-ever live webcast.
The Oct. 25 live broadcast from New York's Irving Center will be held in conjunction with the debut of the New AltaVista Network and will be attended by 450 inner-city school children. During the performance, Palo Alto-based AltaVista will contribute $100,000 to The Refugee Project, a non-profit organization founded by the five-time Grammy winner.
"This webcast will carry the inspirational message of The Refugee Project to millions of young people around the world: you must believe in yourself and strive for self-improvement. The Internet is a great force to correct imbalances of information that can unfairly divide us," said Hill, whose solo debut album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" won the Grammy for Album of the Year. a
The webcast, scheduled for 4 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, Oct. 25, marks the first of many major live events planned for the New AltaVista, the company said in a news release, and signals its commitment to turning kids onto a path of knowledge through the Internet.

Hill started The Refugee Project in 1996 to encourage positive social action among at-risk youth through the development and implementation of social programs. She coined the term "refugee" to describe children who have few outlets to escape social ills.
As a member of the Fugees, Lauryn and fellow artists Prakazrel "Pras" Michel and Wyclef Jean released two albums. Blunted on Reality was released in 1994 and received lukewarm response, while their 1996 follow-up album, The Score, was a multi-platinum smash.
The release of her debut solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" in 1998 marked the beginning of her rise to the top of the music charts as a solo artist. In February, she was nominated for 11 Grammy awards and walked away with five trophies including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album. Hill also has won four NAACP Image awards, three Soul Train Awards, an American Music Award and two Source Hip-Hop awards.
