About Rapchive

Rapchive is a time capsule of hip-hop journalism. Between 1997 and 2019, readers of the Usenet newsgroups rec.music.hip-hop and alt.rap reposted the news of the day — from AllHipHop, SOHH, MTV News, Sonicnet, the wire services and dozens of smaller mastheads, many of them long dead and unarchived anywhere else. Those newsgroups were saved. The news inside them was buried in half a million posts of arguments, lyrics and spam.

We dug it out.

How it was made

The raw material is 439,025 unique Usenet messages from public archives of the hip-hop newsgroups. Structural filtering separated article-shaped posts from discussion; a language-model pass read every candidate and identified genuine reposted journalism, its headline, its original source and the artists it covers; a relevance pass kept the hip-hop; duplicate reposts were collapsed; and the survivors were read, audited and curated by hand. The result is 1,363 news stories spanning 1997–2019 — including golden-era material from before 2000 that exists nowhere else on the open web.

The house rules

• Credit where it exists. Every story shows the publication and journalist credited in the post. 583 stories name no source; the page says source not stated rather than leaving a blank.
• Honest dates. When an article states its publication date we show it. When it doesn't, we show the date it reached Usenet, labelled as exactly that. We never dress a post date up as a publication date.
• Nobody gets outed. The people who reposted these articles were private individuals. No poster names, no email addresses, no signatures — the pipeline strips them, and every build is machine-checked so none reach a page.
• As posted, typos and all. These are the articles as they circulated, not cleaned-up retellings.

Why it looks like 1998

Because the news does. The archive peaks in the era of beveled buttons, Verdana and black-and-gold portals, so Rapchive dresses accordingly — but underneath it is a modern site: fast, responsive, accessible, and readable by every search engine.
