Gil Scott-Heron Charged With Drug Possession

Legendary spoken word poet and "godfather of hip hop" Gil Scott-Heron, who is best known for his 1971 jazz- poetry hit, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," got caught up in some heat recently. Heron was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, and then was charged for drug possession when a package of cocaine was found in the police car that took Heron to be booked. Heron's lawyer claims that the cocaine is not Heron's. The poet could face up to eight years in prison if convicted. Heron's music and style of poetry is considered along with The Last Poets, the foundation upon which hip-hop was built and has been an inspiration to many people in the culture.
