8.23.00 3:00 EDT UPDATED: 7:55 EDT UPDATE: "Source" Awards Halted By Police As Brawls Erupt Dr. Dre The "Source" Hip-Hop Music Awards ceremony was shut down by police Tuesday night after several fights broke out in the audience and backstage following Dr. Dre's acceptance of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. "At approximately 8 p.m., a large fight broke out in the audience," said a spokesperson for the Pasadena Police Department in a statement issued shortly after the incident. "As a result of the fight, scores of people poured out of their seats, some toward the exits of the auditorium, while up to 75 others took to the stage. As uniformed police personnel attempted to quell several fights occurring simultaneously, unknown members of the audience began throwing objects such as bottles and CD covers onto the stage. "For the safety of the audience, and with no apparent hope of continuing the show peacefully, the Pasadena Police Department announced the show would not continue and asked the audience to leave quietly." Authorities said that they did not know what might have started the initial fight, but the room was emptied in an orderly manner without arrests, and there were no injuries reported. Trouble at the awards ceremony began earlier in the evening when a bystander reportedly punched DJ Quik's bodyguard on the red carpet. Police briefly detained Quik after the altercation, but he was released shortly afterward and allowed to attend the show. The "Source" Hip-Hop Music Awards presentation was being taped Tuesday night for an August 29 broadcast on UPN (see "Dr. Dre, Ice Cube To Get Lifetime Achievement Awards"). It's unknown at press time whether any part of the event will be aired or if the ceremony will be re-staged. MTV News will have updates on this story throughout the day.
