Miami Beach prepares for Urban Beach weekend

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Officials expect thousands of hip-hop fans to pack South Beach this Memorial Day weekend for the popular Urban Beach Weekend.

Miami Beach tourism and cultural development director Max Sklar says area hotels are booked to about 92 percent capacity for the weekend. Club and restaurant owners are also hoping the big crowds will produce a boost in revenue during the sour economy.

The annual Urban Beach Weekend is touted as largest urban festival in the country.

City officials are ramping up security measures to prepare for the large crowds. The MacArthur Causeway and some Miami Beach streets will close on an as-needed basis, and authorities from other law enforcement agencies have been brought in to assist Miami Beach officers.
