Knight-Ridder Best and Worst Albums of 1999

KNIGHT-RIDDER — BY TONY HICKS

"The music seemed to get better as 1999 progressed - Rage Against the Machine, NIN, Beck, David Bowie, the Foo Fighters, and Dr. Dre all released records after Sept. 1. It almost made up for the teen-band onslaught and a few obnoxious rap-metal bands during the other eight months. Here are my choices for the best and most disappointing albums of 1999.

#1 Rage Against the Machine #2 David Bowie - "Hours" The king of reinvention mixes soul with moody synthesizers and blazing guitar and ponders life. Every well-written song sounds different, but somehow fits together.

Other picks Tom Waits, Beck, Dr. Dre, Fiona Apple, The Roots, Rex Hobart, Mike Ness, and Foo Fighters.

On the bad list were Chili Peppers, NIN, the Artist, Britney Spears, every Boy Band release and the Foo Fighters (yes, you read right - seems he loved AND hated the album).
