NEW YORK, March 23 -
Sean "Puff Daddy'' Combs took the witness stand in a Manhattan courtroom to testify about a deadly stampede at a charity event he organized in 1991.
Nine people died and several others were severely injured in a crush of fans who were trying to get into a celebrity basketball game and concert at New York's City College.
The suit filed in the New York Court of Claims in Manhattan against the City University of New York says the disaster was caused by overbooking and by lax security on the part of the college.
Combs, who was not yet famous at the time, was the promoter for the event.
He told reporters that he has never been able to forget the night, and said, ``I pray for the families and I pray for the children that lost their lives.''
The plaintiffs are seeking damages that could rise into the millions. About $1 million have already been paid out in other cases.
