Q: Despite the fact that Pro Tools - and other DAW's (digital audio workstations - strat) - are today's principal recording medioums, the MPC and products like it are still hip-hop production's chief arranging, sampling & composing tools. Does it surprise you that the MPC design is still so viable and popular, or does it make a kind of sense?
Linn - Computers have the edge in flexibility, obsolescence protection and internet integration, but dedicated products like the MPC give you a well-integrated hardware/software instrument that is designed for making music, is portable, and works instantly the moment you get a new
song idea, without the need to figure out interfrace protocols, driver compatibility issues and the like. It seems that the most creative musical artists often prefer to focus on music instead of techincal issues.
