Philadelphia, Pa. August 1, 2003 - SMART Corporation and THE PHILLY WORD announce the creation of "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY," hip hop's first national holiday, NOVEMBER 1, 2003, the first day of Hip Hop History Month. Hip hop needs its own holiday to rally around, raise awareness about issues important to the Hip Hop generation, and educate the hip hop community by direct action. "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" is the vehicle to make it happen! The popular hip hop concept "Holler" holds the key to the "HOLLER-DAY," and project organizers are demanding that the hip hop community get organized and "Holler" at educators for better education, "Holler" at politicians and government on Election Day, and "Holler" at the corporations that exploit hip hop without giving anything back! We will sponsor an educational, entertainment and hip hop gala KICKOFF Celebration featuring "HOLLER BACK," an art, essay, positive rap and poetry contest in schools, entertainment, hip hop and special events. "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" is a community outreach and give-back effort that provides forums for freedom of expression and where the entire community can get involved, plus voter education and parent/youth community relations and community service. "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" is an activism and education event for the hip hop generation, and educational forums and a career and job fair will be featured.
The "Hip Hop Vote" can force changes at the local and national level if the hip hop generation participates as they do not now, thus affirming the power of hip hop. "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" is part of the hip hop activist independence movement which started under-ground like hip hop, but now is gaining momentum as a social force. "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" on Sunday, November 1, 2003 features signing a Commitment to HIP HOP on a giant SCROLL and T-SHIRT during the event, and on Monday, November 2, 2003 at Phila. City Hall 12PM to 1PM to KICK-OFF the "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" "HOLLER!" event featuring speakers, entertainment, educational and political activities. All activities will be part of national organizing efforts to establish simultaneous activities like Philadelphia's "HIP HOP HOLLER-DAY" "HOLLER!" in every city or town that wants to participate, raise awareness, get active, and educate their community and youth about issues of importance to the hip hop community like affirmative action, racial profiling, job and housing discrimination and more.
