Facing the rap

The NYPD is set today to install a video camera outside the building that houses Hot 97. The radio station says it is "all for" placement of the device in the cause of ensuring "a more secure environment." Since Hot 97 is suddenly safety-conscious, it shouldn't mind picking up the tab for the camera, right? Station owner Emmis Communications should put its money where Hot 97's mouth is.

Police are fed up with the armed antics of Hot 97 guests and hangers-on. Last week, in yet another episode of ballistic violence, rapper Jamal (Gravy) Woolard got shot in the butt - shortly after someone let loose 11 rounds on the street. But Hot 97 might not have to fund the camera too long, because yesterday its landlord, the New York City District Council of Carpenters, filed eviction proceedings. In addition to three shootings, the union says Hot 97 has generated dozens of other "violent and/or threatening incidents." Pending resolution of the suit, the union wants Hot 97 to interview guests at "some remote location." The Antarctic would be nice.
